President Barack Obama has issued a call for a Summer of Service from June 22 to September 11 – an opportunity to participate in our nation’s recovery and renewal by serving in our communities. Named United We Serve, the effort aims to engage Americans from coast to coast in addressing community needs in education, health, energy and the environment, and community renewal.
As part of the Summer of Service, the President’s Housing and Urban Development Secretary, Shaun Donovan, worked alongside AmeriCorps members at the St. Bernard Project with his wife and family. He noted that it was the best Father’s Day gift ever.
The president’s call to service supports our own Louisiana Service Challenge, launched in April by Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu to encourage citizens to use their time and talent to address our state’s critical social issues.
