What difference can one day make?

Thursday, October 29, 2009

Make a Difference Day last Saturday, October 24, was just one day. But it was a day where volunteers across our state chose to give a little time and a lot of themselves. What difference can one day make? Just consider Shreveport. This report is from AmeriCorps VISTA member Sarah Lange from the new Volunteer Center at the United Way of Northwest Louisiana:

Well Make A Difference Day was wonderful! We directly engaged 300 volunteers in three projects.

--Our volunteers landscaped, laid sod and planted trees for seven homes built by the Fuller Center for Housing.

--Volunteers gathered and participated in the home dedications for two families moving into new Fuller Center homes.

--We collected 200 DVDs to send to Louisiana soldiers serving overseas and created 100 thank-you cards for soldiers from Apollo Elementary students and the Trojan Pep Squad.

--Our volunteers turned two neglected traffic islands into amazing Asian Rock Gardens.

--Volunteers weeded and planted at the ASEANA Community Gardens.

Lunch was donated by a local caterer, Petroleum Club, and Raising Canes Chicken Fingers for all volunteers. Mayor Glover "tweeted" about Go.Do. (he thought our Go.Do. brand was national---and was very happy to hear it was locally created!) and came to both of our volunteer sites to see the work we were doing and meet the volunteers we were engaging.

Overall it was an amazing day, a great first big volunteer day for the Volunteer Center, and a wonderful experience.
