Social Entrepreneurship

Mission

The mission of the Louisiana Office of Social Entrepreneurship is to advance social innovation by supporting the creation and growth of the most innovative, measurable and sustainable solutions to the social problems affecting Louisiana's citizens. In partnership with the public, private, and non-profit sectors, the Louisiana Office of Social Entrepreneurship is committed to providing meaningful capacity building around the tenets of social entrepreneurship, creating credible portals for financial and in-kind resources, and supporting improvements to public policy that enhance social innovation.

History

In the Fall of 2006, Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu founded the Louisiana Office of Social Entrepreneurship. It is the first of its kind in the nation, positioning Louisiana as one of the most welcoming places in the country for social innovation. Social entrepreneurship is an emerging concept that combines business principles with a passion for social impact and demonstrates three core characteristics: social innovation, accountability, and sustainability.
In March 2007, the Louisiana Office of Social Entrepreneurship, in partnership with the Louisiana Serve Commission, launched the Changing Louisiana Initiative- a statewide initiative, consisting of city-specific conferences aimed at promoting citizen involvement in social entrepreneurship and volunteerism. Gatherings held in Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, New Orleans, and Shreveport attracted more than 1500 participants.
There has never been a better time to create or grow a social entrepreneurial endeavor in Louisiana. Citizens are urgently seeking solutions to the social problems that continue to affect Louisianans at alarming rates. The Louisiana Office of Social Entrepreneurship is committed to improving the lives of Louisiana's citizens and the strength of Louisiana's communities.

Resources

Social Entrepreneurship

  • Changemakers.net
Changemakers.net is a pioneering e-zine dedicated to the growing profession of social entrepreneurship. It is an initiative of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, a global nonprofit organization that identifies and invests in leading social entrepreneurs around the world. The mission of the site is to provide inspiration, resources and opportunities for those interested in social change globally.
  • Social Enterprise Alliance
The National Gathering for Social Entrepreneurs is the only organization that is exclusively devoted to providing support for nonprofit social entrepreneurs. More than half of the members are practitioners, the rest are funders, academics, and for-profit businesses. The nonprofit members include both early stage entrepreneurs seeking the nuts and bolts knowledge to start and run a social purpose venture and established social entrepreneurs seeking an opportunity to exchange ideas with other pioneers of the field. The Gathering links nonprofit executives who have operated in isolation with an ongoing forum for addressing the needs and concerns of the social entrepreneur.
  • Social Edge
Social Edge is a program of the Skoll Foundation that was inspired by Jeff Skoll's commitment to connecting people with shared passions. Social Edge is the global online community where social entrepreneurs and other practitioners of the social benefit sector connect to network, learn, inspire, and share resources.

Education

  • The University Network
The University Network for Social Entrepreneurship works with professors and researchers, practitioners, and students to develop social entrepreneurship as a vocation and carry its principles into other disciplines and sectors. It is designed to be a resource hub and an action-oriented discussion forum to expand social entrepreneurship education and participation around the world.
  • Duke University Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship
A research and education center based at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) promotes the entrepreneurial pursuit of social impact through the thoughtful adaptation of business expertise.
  • Harvard University Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation Fellowships in Social Entrepreneurship
The Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation Fellowships in Social Entrepreneurship are designed to equip individuals for national leadership positions that bring the real-world insights of management and entrepreneurship to bear on social problems.
  • Indiana University Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship: Nonprofit and Public Benefit Organizations
In 2006, Indiana University inaugurated the first formal university-based Social Entrepreneurship program in Indiana. Offered to graduate students on both the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses, the Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship: Nonprofit and Public Benefit Organizations is a cooperative program between the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA), the Kelley School of Business, and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. The Social Entrepreneurship certificate prepares students for innovatively approaching public needs with a combination of entrepreneurial practices and social purposes - through the for-profit, nonprofit, and governmental sectors.
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology Entrepreneurship Center
The MIT Entrepreneurship Center is committed to fostering and developing MIT's entrepreneurial activities and interests in three primary areas: education and research, alliances, and community. The MIT Entrepreneurship Center offers courses in social entrepreneurship.

  • University of Southern California Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies
The Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies is among the nation's leaders in entrepreneurship education and research. With six full-time faculty and nine adjuncts who teach in specialized areas such as biomedical, social entrepreneurship, and technology commercialization, the Greif Center is uniquely prepared to meet the varied needs of students in business, science, engineering, and the arts who are looking to become entrepreneurs through business ownership or through venturing in a large corporation.

LAVCD

The Louisiana Association of Volunteer Center Directors (LAVCD) focuses on the strengths our volunteer and civic action centers have to engage citizens in meaningful service opportunities.  The LAVCD has been an informal networking association of Louisiana’s volunteer and civic action centers for over 10 years and in 2005 affirmed a new commitment to work together in addressing the state’s social issues through volunteerism.

The LAVCD meets quarterly to share issues and identify areas for partnership and impact.  In past years, it has successfully applied for and implemented grants for strengthening the association and for expanding an online presence through volunteerlouisiana.gov, a portal where volunteers can search and sign up for service opportunities and where organizations can post their volunteer needs.

The LAVCD foresees a future where the people of Louisiana are inspired to serve and are actively engaged in improving the quality of life with their fellow citizens.  Most recently its members, the Executive Directors of each HandsOn affiliate, adopted a strategic plan to build increased capacity for services within each organization while identifying areas across the state where new civic action centers could be nurtured, launched and mentored.  The goal of the strategic plan is to create and sustain high quality programs that meet the needs of Louisiana’s citizens and promote an ethic of service.  This breadth and depth strategy will ensure that citizens across the state will have a way to make a positive social impact in their communities through meaningful service opportunities.

Volunteer Housing

Nonprofit and faith-based organizations working in disaster recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast may provide housing for volunteers. The type of housing may vary from a common room with bunk beds and shared bathroom facilities to smaller rooms for teams of volunteers to individual rooms for volunteers. Some organizations may charge a nominal daily or weekly fee to offset the costs of providing housing, and some may offer meals with housing. If you are from outside the Gulf Coast area, please contact the nonprofit or faith-based organization you are interested in volunteering with to ask about housing options. If they do not provide housing, they may be able to connect you with an organization that does.

What to Expect

Volunteering is a partnership between you and the organization you are serving with.  The people you serve depend on you to fulfill your obligations as a volunteer.

Your volunteer organization will expect you to:

  • Perform your assignments to the best of your ability.
  • Honor your commitments
  • Be held accountable for your actions.
  • Accept directions.
  • Cooperate with other volunteers and staff; you are part of a team.
  • Respect property, materials and equipment.
  • Be open to change and ready to learn new skills.

You should expect your volunteer organization to:

  • Give you a sense of belonging to the project
  • Provide sufficient training and orientation for you to carry out your volunteer role effectively
  • Offer you responsibilities that are challenging and yet within the range of your abilities and interest
  • Assign a position that has real purpose and is of value to you
  • Be clear in their expectations of you
  • Keep you informed
  • Respect your opinions and ideas and give them fair consideration

Projects:  Nonprofits will do their best to accommodate your interests and skills but please recognize that the organization has a particular project goal and volunteers need to be willing to assist where needed.

Skills: If you have previous experience with a certain skill and would like to utilize it please inform your supervisor. However, this does not ensure that you will be doing this line of work. Also, please inform your supervisor if you have any physical limitations, safety concerns, or are uncomfortable in any situation.

Dress:  You will be advised on appropriate dress for the particular volunteer project you are participating in.  Comfort is key, but sometimes protective clothing is needed depending on the type of volunteer project.  In almost all cases, volunteers should plan to wear closed-toe shoes.

In case of rain:  When you sign up for a project, ask if the project will be cancelled in case of rain or other inclement weather.  Often volunteers participating in outdoor projects will be assigned to tasks indoors. Volunteer supervisors are very creative in making the best use of your time and willingness to serve.

Liability Waiver:  Each volunteer must complete a Liability Waiver for the organization they are volunteering with.  If younger volunteers are allowed, a parent/guardian must sign for minors.

VolunTourism

Since 2005, voluntourists have flocked to Louisiana, particularly to the hurricane-affected areas of Southeast and Southwest Louisiana.  Congregations from all faiths, college students on Spring Break, employees attending corporate meetings and many other visitors continue to dedicate part of their vacation to volunteer service activities. Hundreds of corporations and organizations have developed meaningful ‘service projects’ as part of their meetings and events such as the NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service. More than 1 million volunteers have taken part in recovery efforts since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
