CNCS/DOE School Turnaround NOFO
The School Turnaround AmeriCorps initiative is a collaborative effort by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the U.S. Department of Education (ED). This partnership will support the placement of AmeriCorps members in persistently underachieving schools across the country. Grants will be awarded to organizations that implement programs that utilize AmeriCorps members to engage in evidence-based interventions to increase educational achievement, high school graduation rates, and college readiness for students in our nation’s lowest-performing elementary, middle, and high schools. Grants will fund projects that address multiple student needs and are aligned with comprehensive school turnaround plans. To learn more, click here. PDF versions of the NOFO and the Application Instructions appear on the right side of this page.
Volunteer Louisiana encourages all eligible organizations to strongly consider this opportunity to bring much-needed funding to our state. This is a very short application window and there are two important deadlines to note:
- A Notice of Intent to Apply is due Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 5 pm EST. Failure to submit a Notice of Intent to Apply will render an applicant ineligible to apply.
- Applications are due Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 5 pm EST. Successful applicants will be notified no later than mid-July.
Applicants will apply directly to the CNCS through its eGrants web-based application system. eGrants may be accessed at http://www.nationalservice.gov/egrants/index.asp, and applicants will choose the AmeriCorps State Competitive Direct NOFO option.
Volunteer Louisiana will be providing free informational sessions through GoToMeeting. Two identical sessions are offered (you only need to choose one). Staff will review the NOFO, key details and a brief overview of how to access eGrants. Times are:

Cities of Service
Every day across our country, millions of Americans take time away from their work, their studies and their families to give back to their communities. Millions more Americans would like to help solve local problems, but are wondering how they can get involved and where they can make a difference.
The Louisiana Cities of Service Program is designed to assist in the improvement of the quality of life within a community, and to establish a commitment to the community from younger citizens with the goal of fostering "Brain Gain" rather than "Brain Drain" after higher education by promoting an ethic of volunteerism and community pride.
Cities of Service is a bipartisan coalition of the mayors of large and small cities from across our country who will work together to engage citizens to address the great challenges of our time. Founded in New York City on September 10, 2009, the coalition and its member cities will respond to the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act's historic call to action by finding new and innovative ways to harness the power of volunteers to help solve pressing local challenges.
Cities of Service will lead a multi-year effort to engage Mayors across the State by:
-
Developing a comprehensive service plan and a coordinated strategy focused on matching volunteers and established community partners to the areas of greatest local need.
-
Working with Mayors and elected officials to advance strategies and best practices that accelerate the service movement and produce measurable results.
-
Encouraging other mayors to join this national effort to engage our citizens.
-
Ensuring that the voice of cities is heard in federal legislative, policy, and program discussions related to service, which will help the country achieve the ambitious goals of the Serve America Act.
